If you’re lucky enough to have kids and a swimming pool, chances are that you find yourself becoming the most popular parent on the block during the summer months. Most pool owners don’t mind entertaining neighbors, friends and family who are trying to beat the summer heat. Throwing a pool party is a fun and inexpensive way to spend a sultry Saturday. Make sure to set some ground rules and devise ways to keep the kids busy.

Lay Down the Law
A good rule of thumb is that a responsible adult accompany every child under the age of ten. Especially when there are a lot of kids in the pool, it helps to have a pair of eyes for every child. Older children who are accomplished swimmers may require fewer observers, but they still need supervision. The danger with older kids stems from horseplay, running, jumping and ducking. State the pool rules clearly before anyone gets in. Every swimmer should supply his or her sunscreen and towel, although it doesn’t hurt to stock a few extras.

Feed Me, Mom!
Swimming is hungry work. You’ll want to have nibbles on hand. Salty snacks like crackers, pretzels, nuts or baked chips will encourage the kids to drink more and stay hydrated. Make sure to have plenty of water or sports drinks available, not just sugary juice or sodas. A bowl of freshly sliced melon or chopped veggies with dip are healthy choices. Later on you can throw some turkey or veggie dogs on the grill. Breaking out a box of assorted fruit pops is a sweet way to end the afternoon.

Play Some Games
For most kids, getting wet is enough fun to keep them entertained for a while. If you don’t want your pool party to descend into chaos, plan a few simple games to play at intervals throughout the day. Along with the old standbys “Marco Polo” and tag, you can toss water balloons or do the limbo with a swim noodle. A beach ball works for “Keep It Aloft” or “Keep Away.” String a net across the pool for volleyball or water polo. Make sure to set a timer so everyone takes a turn in the deep end. Older children love dive rings or sticks and timed laps or relay races are always a hit. Many stores discount pool toys and floats around midsummer, so you can use the inexpensive supplies you buy for the party as prizes later.

Make Way for Little Ones
When hosting a mixed party or a party for small children and their parents only, consider the tender age of your smallest guests. For a mixed party, inflate a paddling pool next to the big one. An attached Jacuzzi or spa with the heat turned off but the bubbles on makes a neat contained space for brand-new swimmers. Purchase a fishing game and use a permanent marker to number each fish. Every “catch” corresponds to a small prize. Think bubble wands, beach balls or boats. In another variation of this game for smaller children, substitute rubber ducks for the fish. In addition to prizes, each player takes a ducky home.

Everyone loves a pool party when the heat is on. With planning and ingenuity you can cool down, share time with friends and build lasting summer memories.

We were at my in-laws for the annual pre-Thanksgiving parade with the kids. It has always been a much-awaited event for everyone in town because some barangays invite celebrities to come over and join the parade. What really struck me this parade are the large number of people who joined and supported their candidates for the upcoming elections. Most of them even have kids around – what do they know about politics anyway? Another thing are the motorcyle riders displaying their stunts on the streets.

Check these out.

One rider have even almost had an accident during the event and how long was the parade? I can’t even imagine there’d come a time that these riders would have to argue with each other during parade accidents and man, they should have all gotten their own motorcycle accident attorney to prepare for that. I was thinking lucky because I don’t have boys. The childred on the streets are applauding these men and they are enjoying it very much.

Would you dream of having a rider in the future? I don’t think I can- even if I’d have a boy. My over-protectiveness with my kids won’t allow them to do it. I have always tried to ensure their safety, whenever, wherever and to think they’ll be doing dangerous stunts such as this, it would probably make me faint.

More pics to come!
