Yea you're right. It varies. I am the oldest child but because we lived in a compound where also my cousins of my age are just my next-door neighbors, there was really no need for me to go to school very early. All of us , my siblings went to school at age 5 1/2 . But now , I think more and more parents let their children go to school because there are so many educational tools now available to make kids develop their skills early. There is also the time ---some mothers go to work and those who have no "yayas" , let their kids go to school early. Like here in the US, most mothers send their kids at an early age to school because paying a nanny is more expensive than paying a daycare or montesorri. A nanny is paid $500 to $800 a week , while it's only $200 to $350 a week for daycare.

I'm waiting till my sons are old enough for kindergarten (5 yrs old). They will attend daycare until then. Their daycare teaches them about numbers, letters etc.., not to mention it is run by my sister. Pre-school ends at 2p.m here and with me going to school full time, it would be impossible for someone to pick them up.

I do feel that they are getting the skills they need before hand.
